I remember rather haphazardly working these out while seating awkwardly on Tony Guntharp's livingroom couch in the early days of Damage Studios (think before it had any employees, when Tony was the only founder, and it wasn't even named Damage Studios). The flamethrowing one is particularly stupid, but at the time I was throwing ideas out in a freeform space.

The left hand on the first char always reminds me of what I kept trying to steal from the work of Howard Chaykin circa his Blackhawk series.

A trio of random mobs cobbled together for the Rekonstruction MMOG from a few years ago. This was one troubled area for me, as many of my ideas were all over the map and veered from the Dark Crytal like fantastical to the outright horrific and Gigeresque. None made it to a finished state, but I have hundreds of pages of mutated birds, bugs, bison and bats among a zoological mess of ideas.

A pencil sketch of the band Norma Jean. I have never heard a note but found this promo image that I had intended to parody, because this band looks like a bunch of poser goobs, with various members taking on the appearance of truck stop transients, emo kiddie drips, and dumb jocks.

But I couldn't get past this pencil treatment.

Hopefully they do not sound as laughable as they pose.

I often take so-called finished works and have multiple unused iterations and even take slices out to try other treatments, as is the case here. What started as a simple drawing done with a Cretacolor pencil, and became this mixed media item, I slimmed down into what is at your left and processed it some more through Inkscape and Photoshop.

Just an experiment with coloring in big patches of flat color. There were issues getting this right, not the least of which is trying to use the pentool on an IBM Thinkpad finger controller while on a moving train.

So this is one of the few concpetual drawings initially made for public consumption that I did not completely abhor. The char had a working name of Sophia, and this initially was insprired from an image of Sis' stock image gallery of her out in the Nevada desert, escaping from a rusting washing machine.

I came up with dozens of variations of the trike you see here, and I wanted them to be predominant small vehicles with various configurations to meet the terrains we were working on. Mayb someday someone will want an idea for an animation project and ask me let them do this (hint hint).

So I just completed a final exam for an electoral politics and voter behavior course, so here is something I cobbled up from what started to be drawingthe back of the head of the person seated infront of me...which then changed to add a floating chair, bare feet and a bird.

Well, there were supposed to be two images here, but recently Google/Blogspot's image upload tool has proven to be an utter pile of garbage that just jumps to a blank screen after attempting to upload.

UPDATE: It finally worked, after a dozen tries. (the upload tool is still garbage).

Onto the images: a weird tribal guy, some classmate from my STS course who fidgeted a lot (whoever sits in front of me is potentially subject to doodlage), and two shots of some gangly robot with a tube-bulb type head.

It is unique for me in that all the sources are digital, but it was a test case for some ideas that will now be brought into my mixed media universe.

It also is much more symmetrically balanced than most things I have done.

I tightened up the pencils on this recently, and will probably get around to adding color before making this available as a print for sale on DevArt. I have not named this fellow yet, but I like the idea of something silly, like Bertram or Nigel.

This was one of the first developmental ideas for a merc/fixer type class in the game that had a tribal feel and denoted by various tattoos, including full facial inkmasks. The designs were influenced by research I did into Maori and Japanese Irezumi patterns, as well as ideas I had been playing with at the time for a personal interpretation of Rachel Summers (aka the 2nd Phoenix in the Marvel Comics universe).

So Alex Toth is one of these guys I always should have paid far more attention to when I was younger, since he was such an influence on artists I was very into, such as Mike Mignola and Dave Mazzuchelli. I am making up for lost time.

There is a great use of blacks and a general economy of line. His workstands up well decades after the fact, and thankfully he is still roaming the earth, and I never until recently (just now when I looked it up in wikipedia) knew he did design work for cartoons like Spaceghost and Jonny Quest.

This is the first thing I drew once Damage Studios moved into their office space on 2nd and Townsend in SOMA. A fantastic office space run by an utterly degenerate and incompetant office management group, that was an otherwise place to work.

Rekonstruction in some ways started here.

I did not even have most of my supplies moved in or my equipment set up, but I too the art table we picked up at Ikea and set out to give it a dry run.

I rarely delve into horror or fantasy stuff, as I really have little aptitude with it. But I had a small notebook (not sketchbook, this thing had notes from my old Arabic and Brazilian History courses) and I had been having a bit of a rough go that week and started drawing a hand and then I kind of went into an anatomical studyand then detoured into "let's give the guy an arm made of tentacles similar to an octopus or the tendrils from a Portuguese Man of War...and then came the fin/tail...and then I got bored of it and stopped.

Something more conceptualized might have made an interesting mob for the Rekonstruction game in the ocean areas.

This was one of the first chickenscratch doodles I put into my newest black bound sketchbook. I probably should add like 30 seconds of ink to it to see what happens. I initially just wanted an excuse to use a graphite pencil I had also just bought at the time. I only in the last few years really started using regular pencils and thinker lead implements after years and years of strictly being into clutch pencils.

I met Jason once when he was with Greg Osby's live band, and he was a great player and nice person in the rather brief encounter.

I have seen him play with both the bandwagon and solo, and he always shines. I am pretty much convinced he is the most important pianist in jazz since Monk.

Jaz Coleman is the frontman for post-punk/industrial/arty metal band Killing Joke. He is also a composer of symphonic works for various orchestras in places like New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Egypt and the UK.

Another of the concept sketches made to fit to the storyline releases for the Rekonstruction MMOG website (now defunct). I actually had a goal to do a Frankk Quietly/Geof darrow style semi-topdown poster of this room, because I felt the use of conceric circles as a design element could have made for some arresting imagery.

As it stands, if I ever dig up the roughs for that idea and flesh it out, it will be a while before anything like that would see the light of day (I have not really started anything new related to Rekonstrcution, but merely posting up initially internal work, and did some post-facto finishes on largely complete work.

Who knows though.

Another of the Rekonstruction MMOG images, this one was put together to satiatethe need to get some concept art availbel for general consumption.

Much of the time there, I was in disagreement with what was ready for prime time and what was not, but it was not my call to make, and I since have had some measure of fun "finishing" some of the items I would have preferred to release on my DevArt account and seeing the generally positive reaction as a validation of sorts.

This image had potential, but was otherwise left a bit anemic t omatch the other anemic images used for the main site at the time.

This was a ten year old loose sketch of what was going to be a batch of interpretations of Fremen in stillsuits from the Dune series of books, that I then started retooling for the Rekonstruction MMOG for Damage Studios. All I ended up adding was the rather large cutting utensil.

Oh well...maybe I'll do something with it eventually.

I ...just want to bang on the drum all day. OK, silly Todd Rundgren songs aside, this is one of the few 3D renders I can find of stuff from the Rekonstruction game. Its a generic 50-100 gallon drum. IIRC this was worked on in a hurry for an alpha test of some of the engine stuff we were working on. This and a weird hydrant I remember distinctly. The textures are acrylic paints and Photoshop, with 3D and final render put together in Maya.

Done several years ago in pencil, rapidograph and pen and ink washes, it was never finished, but may very well end up as a blueprint (pun on partially intended) for something more final.
